A rainy afternoon in Tynemouth

We decided to give ourselves the afternoon off this week and head out somewhere nice for lunch. After watching Out of Tyne's Instagram Stories the previous day, I was reminded that we'd been meaning to visit Longsands Fish Kitchen in forever so we jumped in the car and set out towards the coast. I had visions of a nice coastal walk before fish and chips but the weather had other plans so we decided to hide away in a coffee shop instead. You are kind of spoilt for choice when it comes to coffee shops in Tynemouth but we ended up in Rene's which is nice and homely with a shabby-chic vibe. £4.40 for two Lavazza Coffees later and we found a cosy corner to sit, chat and browse magazines. Perfect!

After our coffee we headed a couple of doors down to Longsands Fish Kitchen - there's a proper restaurant and a takeaway with a little counter too. We opted for the restaurant - it was fairly busy so I'd say if you're keen to visit, I'd probably book.

The two course special for £12.95 caught our eye - I ordered the squid and then cod and chips. All this food for that amount of cash is just superb value. It was all super fresh and delicious. There was a little too much for a lunchtime though and I think I'd try something a little lighter next time as I honestly thought I might have to roll home! Steve is going to write up a full review of our lunch over on Big Stevie Cool soon as it comes highly recommended. The staff were so friendly too - it really is a gem of a place.

After lunch we did debate heading over to Gareth James Chocolatier for a brownie fix (to take away) but we were far too full up to even contemplate chocolate so left it for another day. If you'd like to see more of the food we ordered, I put together a short video below. I hope you like it and if you do, please hit subscribe.

Tynemouth is around a 30 minute drive from our home in Cramlington but always worth the drive - I don't think I've ever eaten anywhere I didn't like and it's perfect for a little date afternoon.

Let me know if you've visited Rene's or Longsands and what you think. Also, we're always looking for ideas for places to visit for lunch along the coast so let me know if you have any suggestions for where to try next.

  1. We loved Longsands when we visited, we ate in the takeaway bit and had classic fish, chips and mushy peas. It was so good that we told everyone we met about it yet haven’t actually been back ourselves!

  2. I always enjoy beach walks over at Tynemouth. I think the fish and chips at Longsands warrant a trip out there!

  4. I haven't visited longsands yet, its definitely on the list. We love to visit Tynemouth at a weekend on the metro and wander the market (drinking OCC coffee) and then walk up to the priory and around the seafront.

Last time we visited a place called Coast Kitchen on the main street and it was so lovely, the staff was incredible, food was great quality and not too pricey, I'd definitely recommend for a family brunch.
