NIgel Slater's Toast at Northern Stage Newcastle

I have been provided with press tickets to see the show but have not been paid to write this post.

Nigel Slater is one of those chefs you either love or hate I think and I am firmly in the love camp. His book 'The Christmas Chronicles' is one of my favourite books to leaf through in the run-up to Christmas and I really enjoy the way cooking and stories are entwined.

I am therefore super excited that Nigel Slater's Toast is heading to Newcastle's Northern Stage this September. Direct from the West End, Toast vividly recreates Nigel Slater's childhood and memoirs through the tastes and cooking experiences he shares with his mother to the rules of restaurant dining and the politics of playground sweets.

I'm going to watch the show with my brother Mark who runs Evan's Bistro in Whitley Bay and Evan's On the Wall at Segedunum. We both love food and I'm sure we're going to nod along in agreement to some of the issues shared throughout the evening.

Although Nigel Slater does not star in the production, he has played a huge role in bringing the stage show to life and I can't wait to see Giles Cooper (from Pride and The Lady in the Van) take on the starring role.

Not just for foodies, Toast shares the story of a young boy who feels abandoned as his mother dies and his father falls in love with another woman who is very different from his mother. Both Mark and I have step-parents too and I'm sure we're going to be able to relate as this is played out on stage.

Toast has received glowing reviews across the board. A play about growing up with food, I can't wait to see it and share the night with my bro - I think it's the perfect night out for reminiscing with siblings. I haven't read the book so it's all going to be new material for me and I can't wait.

Toast plays at Northern Stage from 17-21 September 2019. Tickets are available from just £10. You can find out more and book online here.
